I DID IT! yesterday after watching hours of extreme couponing on TLC i tried it for the first time with the (okay tons of) help from my australian friend Liz.
Liz is a masterful couponer, she has the binder, the magazines, the clipouts, the websites, and all the price matching inserts.
I cannot even begin to explain some of the deals she told me about last night as we weaved in and out of the giant (and blocked off) aisles of wal mart (don't shoot! i don't like wal mart but on tuesdays here it's where you need to be, and if you go to the pleasant grove one instead of orem is is... much more pleasant than orem. plus the cashiers know you are coming so it's less of a wrestling match and more of a checkout)
so, while it was 930pm on a tuesday, and the staff of walmart was kind of running around with their heads cut off because construction workers had blocked off most of the main walkway of the store to rip up the floor with a deafening machine, we made off like BANDITS. BANDITS PEOPLE.
I spent all afternoon clipping online coupons, i'm a noob- i don't get the sunday paper, or magazines chock full of coupons, i get billions of inserts for fast food clips and electronics and that is IT. i had a lot of work cut out for me. ha ha.
after one ink cartridge change and three leg cramps later i headed off to watch the master do her thing.
some things that may (or may not) be interesting to future coupon aspirers about walmart:
1. walmart's coupon policy: they will match ANY price in your town, so shop around before you go if you want cheap produce
2. on tuesdays, in the orem/provo/utah valley area- because Ridley's family market has begun to take double coupons on tuesdays walmart now must do the same. so any coupon you bring into the store on tuesday, your cashier will scan TWICE. (for each item)
i think that's all i know right now...
but
it was THE COOLEST EXPERIENCE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD TO WATCH MY PURCHASE OF $87.48 GO DOWN TO $44.00
that is almost half what i should have paid. and i had an entire cart full.
i only used about 15 coupons.
i only did it in one transaction.
the best deals:
a free box of herbal tea
2 packages of basmati rice for 2$
2 packages of razors 10.68 each for free
2 lbs of cheese for 3.00
3 boxes of strawberries for 1.25 each
2 bottles of comet cleaner for .68
as many cans of tomato paste as i could hold for .25
i wasn't obnoxious and my cashier loved me.
maybe.
she was a vet of coupons to say the least.
and she had almost every price match memorized in her head already.
so, dear wal mart- watch your back. i intend from now on to come to your store in the night on probably tuesdays and rob you blind!
love,
j

See, this is a world I would love to be a part of, but am extremely intimidated by. I need an Australian friend to guide me too.
argh--i WISH i was a couponer! i'm just not though. i feel like a bad mormon for not couponing.
so i'm actually from the SF bay area and just visited SD on vacation with my family--so it's probably not from there! and i'm not sure if i ever took a botany class...BUT i see that you regularly in liz whittaker/chapman's blog sidebar. this makes me think perhaps i know you from theater people? i am no theater person, but i was a comic frenzy person a few semesters back with jacob...
pahahah, b- now i really have no idea how i know you. your face is super familiar. probably because i read your blog now :] i've NEVER been a couponer- they kind of used to embarrass/intimidate me. my family never used them, and when i was a cashier people who used them bothered me. but if you are really super organized then it's not too bad! i dont know how often i'll do it- but i'm trying to keep up with it...
I am dying to try to extreme couponing! I need someone to teach me hooow.
