Vet!

Today we went to the vet for the last of dash's shots and they informed us that he is a BOXADOR (a boxer/lab mix) which is actually a huge relief because when we mention he has pit bull in him people go nuts.

Yesterday we went up to beaverdick park exploring, I've never been there during the day but it's lovely by a beautiful river. We walked for a few hours, caught frogs and a snake (baby gardener), and went on this big hike through a pheasant hunting ground that trrails off behind beaverdick. (what kind of name is tha really?)

dash ran up and down the river, scaring all the frogs and splashing us with cold water.

when we were out in the middle of nowhere, brandon got a call from byuidaho communication professor asking him if he would write for the school news releases/employee newsletter thing.
and we are so excited!
then i sank knee deep into dried out riverbottom and almost lost my shoes.

brilliant.

brandon and i trudged back to the car, happy and muddy and dash was having the time of his life wandering in and out of bushes smelling everything.
we drove home and then up to IF to get brandon some work clothes (which he looked very dashing in)
right when we were checking out
i found the c utest thing in the entire world
and i am proud to say that we are now the owner of our first article of baby clothing.
i have to warn everyone that we are NOT pregnant, (how can both of us be pregnant?) and we have NO INTENTIONS of becoming preggers. BUT we had to buy the duck. The duck, is a little fluffy soft duck costume for 24 month olds with striped stockings for feets and a little hood with a bill on it.
i'll post a picture later
but for now let me assure you all that it is the most darling thing in the whole world.
and i want to dress my first born in it all year round.

we live by the nature park so it's okay.

we returned home tired and poorer
and to a happy very excited puppy.
we watched a movie and i worked on dead people. for the living.

me or the moth

There is something in the night
here,
It is chillingly beautiful,
and makes your bones
ache
for some old memories
to be stored in such
a place.
The moon is fresh
her aura is
the simplest blue
The world turns
slowly
monochromatic around her,
Fluorescent lights are
scarce and
compete with
her shine.
They are envious
pink and green.
As the moths make their
usual trail towards
her, they fly into the
car windows, blindly mistaking
the glass for cool
soft air
or the weave
of a corn top head.
Hurt by the truth.
Faintly
I wonder
who is outside
the glass,
me
or the
moth.

"It reminds me of President Hugh B. Brown's statement about marriage. He said he had always been told that when he got married he would come to the end of his troubles. So he got married, only to discover they were speaking about the front end. Now, you returned missionaries who are still sitting around single, don't chuckle too loudly at that. I am not through with you this morning!

Paul pled with those new members about the way President Hinckley is pleading with new members today. The reminder is that we cannot sign on for a moment of such eternal significance and everlasting consequence without knowing it will be a fight--a good fight and a winning fight, but a fight nevertheless. Paul said to those who thought a new testimony, a personal conversion, or a spiritual baptismal experience would put them beyond trouble, "Call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions" (Hebrews 10:32; emphasis added).

Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.

For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.
. . .

. . . If any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. . . .

. . . We are not of them who draw back unto perdition. [Hebrews 10:35–36, 38–39; emphasis added]

In LDS talk that is to say, "Sure it is tough--before you join the Church, while you are trying to join, and after you have joined." That is the way it has always been, Paul said, but don't "draw back," he warned. Don't panic and retreat. Don't lose your confidence. Don't forget how you once felt. Don't distrust the experience you had. That tenacity is what saved Moses when the adversary confronted him, and it is what will save you.

I suppose every returned missionary and probably every convert within the sound of my voice knows exactly what I am talking about: appointments for discussions canceled, the Book of Mormon in a plastic bag hanging from a front-door knob, baptismal dates not met. And so it goes through the teaching period, through the commitments, through the baptism, through the first weeks and months in the Church, and more or less forever. At least the adversary would pursue it forever, if he thought he could see any weakening of your resolve or any chink in your armor--even if it is after the fact.

This opposition turns up almost anyplace something good has happened. It can happen when you are trying to get an education. It can hit you after your first month in your new mission field. It certainly happens in matters of love and marriage. (Now I am back to those returned missionaries.) I would like to have a dollar for every person in a courtship who knew he or she had felt the guidance of the Lord in that relationship, had prayed about the experience enough to know it was the will of the Lord, knew they loved each other and enjoyed each other's company, and saw a lifetime of wonderful compatibility ahead--only to panic, to get a brain cramp, to have total catatonic fear sweep over them. They "draw back," as Paul said, if not into perdition at least into marital paralysis.

I am not saying you shouldn't be very careful about something as significant and serious as marriage. And I certainly am not saying that a young man can get a revelation that he is to marry a certain person without that young woman getting the same confirmation. I have seen a lot of those one-way revelations in young people's lives. Yes, there are cautions and considerations to make, but once there has been genuine illumination, beware the temptation to retreat from a good thing. If it was right when you prayed about it and trusted it and lived for it, it is right now. Don't give up when the pressure mounts. You can find an apartment. You can win over your mother-in-law. You can sell your harmonica and therein fund one more meal. It's been done before. Don't give in. Certainly don't give in to that being who is bent on the destruction of your happiness. He wants everyone to be miserable like unto himself. Face your doubts. Master your fears. "Cast not away therefore your confidence." Stay the course and see the beauty of life unfold for you."

Therefore Your Confidence"

burgie bogie

my dog is licking my armpit and my husband is asleep after a long day of work and casserole. the house is the cleanest it has ever been, the herbs have been planted in the garden and my next door neighbor hauls fertilizer. The garden is going to be awesome until it dies. Garments are really hard to find, almost as hard as jobs in idaho.

My head is spinning with applications and resumes and re resumes and re re re resumes. And I've got to sell my car.

And go to the gym.
Pray that the casserole stays where it is supposed to.
(not my thighs.)
on a treadmill.

The guest bed is finally made so if you ever want to come visit
then you should.

I make a mean green bean zuchhiinne (it rhymed) spaghettine casseroline.

the neverhood

too much sleep gives you nightmares.

or eating right before sleep gives you nightmares
anyhow
last night i dreamed that i came home and dash has lost an eye, and that he was a weiner dog, and that he didnt remember me and he couldnt hear me.

i ended the dream in a mary kay store where they put me in a fluffy nightgown with too many ruffles and made me put stuff all over my face.

and really i just wanted to go home to idaho.

it was terrible.

in contrast,

today is girls day so we are going to get nails done and go to some salad place down by the beach.
the boys (i asked if i could have a sex change before today) are going to phils bbq shack and who knows what else.

tennis is this morning again except this time i was not invited...
hahahah.

my dad has written out a schedule of the week in his flawless handwriting

(backwards...)

i finally pulled out the sewing machine brandon restored for me for a wedding present... it made me cry, i'd forgotten how beautiful it is.
it's an old singer table machine. i wish i could take it back with me on the plane...

oh i love being home! yesterday my mom let me and my sister raid her closet (which is unbelieveable) and i got to wear all anthropologie to church. it's the first time in a while i've felt pretty.

it's good to be home
August 14, 2010
Today we began the day with fresh blueberry pancakes and laughs between blankets and bites on the back porch in the morning mist. After that we got dressed and went to play tennis, where I embarrassed myself soundly although I should have been a great proficient if I had learned younger. (not)...
We played doubles until we began swimming in the heat of ourselves, which drove us out from the sun and into the pool. we set up a volleyball net and began a steady tourney of water volleyball and I was surprised to see the teams evenly matched. We took a break for lunch which was a variety of incensed oils, pesto, mozzerella, honeycomb, fruits, chicken wings, butternut squash soup, spreads and a bunch of different breads. The honeycomb from savannah georgia was the hit and we all felt like we'd left california and landed in italy under the vines and breeze with the waterfall in the backdrop. Now that we've competed all the energy out of each other, we look like slugs smoothed out over the house couches.

so sleepy.
tonight is fat matt's bbq steaks
geoff gets home monday
and my cheeks are the color of ripe tomatoes.

and maybe just as fat.

dashing

So, brandon and I are on vacation in california! it has been awesome and beautiful, the weather here is perfect every day and there's tons to do. Our first day we went swimming early in the morning in the ocean, it was lovely and we were glad we had wetsuits but i kept freaking out about sharks so it ended up being less working out and more just me shlopping around and eyeing bubbles and warm spots fearfully without watching the waves and then getting clobbered. After that we went home and sat by the pool and read the list of short stories that my family is all reading so that we can have a discussion about them together. I am really excited- the list is full of goodies and some new ones i've never read before. There really is something magical about short stories. They sing an entire novel in one small chorus. They are beautiful and intricate and simple at the same time, they say more than what is there to anyone who reads them. Rather, the well written words. It makes me ashamed to write sometimes. So far I've read The Hitchhiker by Roald Dahl, Two Soldiers by William Faulkner, The Short Life of Francis Macomber by Ernest Hemingway, Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, and Marriage, Araby by James Joyce, The Steal by Jeffery Archer, and I think there are a few more...

Tuesday night we all went to the padres vs. pirates game which was really fun. By the seventh inning people around us were getting really ripe but we had fun sneaking in snacks (in sarah and my awesome pocket purses) singing really loudly, talking in austrian accents and we even participated in starting a wave that went all the way around the stadium. I felt pretty important. Padres also won. Thanks to our awesomeness.
Just kidding, thanks to their talent.

Yesterday brandon and I went driving up the coast, it was lovely to just relax and smell the ocean and see the sights. I haven't been along the coast just to see it for a long time. I guess I've resigned that california is really my home- I can't pretend that connecticut and the east coast are where i belong anymore- even though my heart yearns for the magical memories I have from my childhood there.

I bet the humidity would kill me now if I went back.

In all, it's been a great week. But I have to say that I miss this guy

more than I can possibly word. I've never felt that way about a pet before (i guess I never really had any big pets that... acted like they had souls?) (is that awful?) I've never been this attached before to an animal. Most of them have died before I got the chance. I worry about him all the time, is he happy? is he warm is he fed?
These are ridiculous questions since he is in the loving arms of my mother in law (who, if she can raise brandon without him dying or being lost... that's all i need to say) at the cabin in sundance and he has a friend (their golden retriever kayla) to keep him company.

But i wonder if he misses me too.

or if he'll recognize me with how dark i've gotten.

just kidding.
sandy eggo is a b l a s t.
lachelle and manasseh get in tonight!
next week we are paddleboarding, balboaing, beaching (in general), going to the del mar fair horse races and playing a smorgeushborg of games and eating ourselves silly.

i can't wait.

rapture

the last three days have been the BEST! we love rexburg so much, I can't believe how much I missed being here. The nights smell like summer, and I feel like I'm camping out 24/7 (except we get to come home to our beautiful new bed and house) brandon has been so good helping me hang up everything- eating raspberry rhubarb jam and riding our bikes everywhere. At night the pool is open swim so we go and there is always an interesting group of people and kids playing and swimming. the first night we went a father was there helping teach all his boys how to swim (it was awful cute) and we swam for an hour and then worked out for an hour. Brandon has decided to do an iron man (someday) and i am behind him almost 100% (with two jobs, school and me and dash he has his hands pretty full...)(and i worry because thats what im good at!) so we were at the gym until almost midnight, and i admit that i totally fell asleep on a crunch mat and drooled. At about eleven thirty i remembered as i stumbled up the gym steps that we had ridden our bikes to the gym... no bueno- but it was fun with endorphins and exhaustion creeping over us in the dark bumpy roads laughing in the sprinklers and teetering home. Yesterday I remembered that brandon's bike has an old light on the front of it so we put some D batteries in it and the thing still works! So last night wasn't such a dark bumpy road home (kinda still bumpy since hey- it's rexburg and construction is one of the four seasons of the year).

Sleep has been bliss after workouts like that.

And I admit breakfast portions have grown.
My mom told me the recipe for her "green drink" every year or so my mother goes on a homeopathic food rampage and declares all carbs and sugars out of her diet (it must be why she looks so young...please please please let me have those genes) like when we were young, she went through a phase where all she cooked was homemade soups... which was nice until summer came (in connecticut), and then she went through this thing where if anyone even so much as sniffled we had to be doused in echinacia (cone flower) remedies (tea, drops, etc.) honestly the stuff is so bitter i think i drank more honey than echinacia that year...anyhow. then she found this drink called superfood (she gave me a bottle of the pills because i couldnt drink the stuff without gagging, she used to mix it with v8 juice every morning and give it to me, she swore the stuff kept us all alive and truthfully i didnt get sick at all those years in highschool. so maybe it works!) when i went to college i still had those pills and i wrote superpoop on the outside which made for an interesting story once my roommates found it. the stuff is like, every green thing on the planet (seriously) compacted into a green powder. it's... let's just say i can't drink plain v8 juice anymore without gagging at the memory. and now she has this green drink that is a homemade spinach smoothie with flax seed and strawberries and (semi-normal) stuff. so i asked her what the recipe was because brandon was interested and its actually not bad. it tastes like you are drinking a salad.
so we've been drinking this after the gym each night and it's incredible.
i feel like a new person.

today we are selling my car (hopefully) a guy and his wife are driving from twin falls to come look at it.
i'm excited and sad at the same time.
the house is amazing we broke in the oven with a pizza (almost burnt the house down...) and our neighbors above us are hilarious.

i'll have to write about that another time
toodle pip!
August 2, 2010
ps
i found the entire back fence covered in wild raspberries this morning.

it ended well
except for i stained the entire front of my skirt reaching for the big ones in the back.

all i need to learn now is how to make jam.
today brandon told me that he invented the phrase the early bird may get the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese.

when he was two years old.

i have the best husband in the entire world.
the only hard part is that he knows it.

so how can i show him?
oreo cheesecake cupcakes
that's how.

also by going to the pool and swimming for an hour.

love
jacqueline

tomorrow we are going fishing!
i've never been fishing.
the only thing i'll probably catch is brandon after he falls in the water on accident.
