so big so beautiful

four months! holy cow time is flying by...

this is grace's pouty lip, she's inherited it from the cochran family and i LOVE IT TO PIECES. she only really does it when she's been telling me nicely for more than a half hour that she is hungry and i still haven't gotten her fed yet!

Boo, baby.

aren't these baby costumes hilarious? i think nacho is my favorite...

when is day

grace is taking the longest nap and deserves an award but i didn't realize how bored i would be without her.

so i'm snuggling up in a sweater of b's and some leggings and calling today what it is.
wedenesedsaydyadyay (when will i learn how to spell that?)

b's leaving for drill tomorrow until monday, then i'm REALLY going to be bored when grace naps.
food lovers all over: do you ever go look at smitten kitchen? i could spend days on that blog and probably get so hungry that i'd eat my computer before i'd pry myself away from the yummy pictures.

grace got a new toy (thanks grandma elaine!) she's a little overwhelmed by it (the thing is like mouse trap on crack) but i know she'll grow to love it (not crack, the toy)

i wish you could see her little ballerina feet! they are all cute and pointed.

is it christmas yet?
in our family we have what i call the crap tree (only because we have the family tree and the fake beautiful gorgeous tree in the entryway so i call the real one the crap tree) (i openly abhor the gorgeous fake tree, and really love the real crap tree) and every year my mom gets us each an ornament that is symbolic of our year in some way. since grace has been born now b and me can start our very own crap tree!

i got her a peanut ornament for when she was in my tummy last christmas, and (mom fail) i got a baby's first christmas 2010 ornament. so... i'm going to have to block out the ten and write eleven over it or something... brandon's ornament is a secret and he gets to get me mine so i don't know what mine will be. probably a treadmill. blehhhh! hey! perfect timing guess who is awake?!

talk about it

I wondered how somebody on all other sides of the world could feel what I was feeling that day. I was thirteen, and my father commuted each day to downtown Manhattan New York.

We lived in Wilton Connecticut and it was a safe place, filled with trees and rock walls and arrowheads and ponds that people swam in. I caught frogs and fireflies in the summer and stayed out in the white icy branches of winter bundled up so tightly that I never thought I would be cold.

All of my friend's parents worked in the city, the two hour travel every morning and afternoon was a small price to pay when you lived in a place like wilton. There was a small town center with a white gazebo, an ice cream shop, and two markets and a lumber shop. I'm sure there was more there, but that's all I remember.

And after that day, I remember how everything changed. I remember the little flags stuck in the grass, everywhere I looked I could see the big broad stripes and the tiny stars waving. They grew up out of the ground, the buildings fell, but the feelings that replaced those lives- grew and grew. we lit candles and cried. the lights were too harsh to turn on, the phones didn't work.

at lunch my friend came in crying.

I asked her what was wrong and she started cursing and talking animatedly about terrorists. I didn't even know what that was. I closed my ears, and walked to my math class. I sat behind mike grippi. the blinds were open for the first time all year. walking down the hallway I could hear everyone whispering, the teachers had the tv's on.
Even though everyone was talking, I felt like I was in a seashell.

new york, the towers, the people.
my dad.
your dad.

why?

nobody explained anything.
a lady came over the speaker and told us we were needed at home.
we were allowed to use the phones if our parents were in the city to call but the lines were too crowded.

herded onto the bus, I can remember clutching my backpack to me, holding it tight like a friend.
and crying for my friends.

weeping for myself, I didn't know where my dad worked or where he would be when this all happened.

it was a terrible, terrible day.

I'm going to echo my friend liz's thoughts when she said the thing that scared her the most was the tears of her step mom.

when I got home I ran all through the house and I couldn't find my mother.
she was in the basement with the tv on
kneeling and soaking her shirt with tears.

that scared me the most.
I knew then, that it was real. that all the people leaping from the buildings to save themselves, the flames and the smoke, were all confirmed in my mothers eyes.

I'm not trying to be dramatic, I just want to write what happened.
so that I don't forget.

because it's important, someday we'll all be gone and the people who weren't there or here yet, need to remember.

the lives that we lost that day and the lives that we've lost since
fighting
so that you and me can write and read and think and pray to whatever we believe in.

so that we can all be on the same team.
I never felt more sorrow, or joy and pride in my country
and I've felt it every single year since.

and then there was me

warning, lots of links to click on ahead. go ahead, click on them- you wont be disappointed.

okay-- christmas 2011 i'm ready for you. i have gifts for everybody except brandon (how to find out his shoe size sneaker-ily) and chris because they are the hardest to shop for. (minus marcusdouglas because i happened to find something extraordinarily perfect for him early in the game)

though, brandon taught me that in order to get people what they WANT and not what you think they want you should make a list all year of things they say they want randomly and go off that.

i'm a horrible gift giver.

i just get so distracted by things that dont matter!

i'm like "OH MY GOODNESS, GEOFF ALWAYS NEEDED A USB SHAPED LIKE BATMAN!"
or
"chris absolutely pines for this wooden bird desk clip from anthropologie!"

NOT.

the thing is, i buy people things I THINK ARE COOL.
and it only dawned on me in the last few years watching other people open gifts i give them and the look of puzzled confused semi joy and the second thought of "where do i put this and why do i need this?" comes over their faces...
that maybe the gifts i get aren't that sweet.

and to top it off, i'm surrounded by people who are EXTREMELY EXCELLENT gift givers.

i.e. sarah m. tayebi example: even though i own more clothes than the average clothing store, she still gets me cute clothes because she knows i love them. and she has awesome taste.
i.e. geoffrey francis: getting sarah a people's magazine subscription. and me an ernie beanie. enough said.
i.e. mom: makes people the most gorgeous quilts that will last forever and are outrageously artistic and take her all year to put together and sometimes longer. i'm afraid to USE the quilts she's made for me (that's how nice they are) and so all of them are on display.
i.e. chris: has excellent taste and always gets very thoughtful gifts that are cherished by the person forever.
i.e. dad is a combination of all of these things (minus the quilting)
i.e. lachelle: always finds funky, artsy, cute, AND substantial things that nobody knows about yet because she is ahead of her time.
i.e. brandon: who obviously knows what i want for every single present opportunity because i mention what i like and he remembers really really well. and he's good at surprising me.

and then, there was me.

i hope grace gets her gift giving from ... not me.

are you good at giving gifts?
got any tips?

foods!

tonight: homemade chicken tortellini noodle soup with sweet potatoe waffle fries and cranberry orange scones for dessert. nomnomnom

lands alive!

this baby is growing too fast!
she is going to be a baby duckie for halloween,
and i love this costume because i've got it for her
in two sizes.

my favorite part about the costume is the huge amount of fluff through the whole body and butt area. frau meow has converted to a duck!

she liked the costume too until the hood kept hiding her eyeballs. slash it got in the way of a VERY important feeding session. (apparently)

this girl coos and gurgles all day. she said mama for the first time yesterday but she has no idea what it meant to me! she's just trying out all her sounds, while she spins around on the ground like a sun dial. trying to take the whooole big world in.

all men stop reading: you'll thank me later

i had an iud put in last week and it's been giving me some trouble. believe me when i tell you that b and i have tried almost every single thing out there on the market besides an iud and removing the baby making hardware altogether. and spent a huge amount on all of it. so those were the last two options. i was so excited initially but i didn't stop to consider the side effects...

normally i'm a light bleeder. i did NOT get the copper iud, so i expected spotting and some bleeding but not the amount that comes with the copper iud. i am drowning in blood.
i cant remember if that's supposed to happen or not. i knew it was a possibility, but didnt think it was a probability.

oh poop.

and i've been having REALLY REALLY awful migraines. i HAVE NEVER HAD A HEADACHE like these ones. and they started the day after i got the iud and they ARE listed as a primary symptom of the iud i got... but so is cerebral ischemia. (in association with the migraines) which is basically a stroke and can cause irreversible brain damage.

sweet.

on the fda website it says, CALL YOUR HEALTH PRACTITIONER if you experience any of these symptoms and the first one listed is the sudden onset of severe migraines (these were so bad that i was having trouble seeing) (i felt like i was walking around with cross eye glasses on or something) so, i called my ob office. a nurse who obviously didn't want her labor day weekend interrupted or who knew i have acute anxiety had a really nice time explaining away my headaches and telling me it was probably just allergies or a tension headache (both of which ive NEVER EVER HAD in my life). she told me that since the iud was so expensive that it would be a waste to just take it out because of a headache.) medicine, sleep, and water have not helped these headaches. i am not crazy.

if i get brain damage or bleed to death i told b he can have my ipod.
not that that even matters anymore since he got an iphone.

i hate birth control, but i hate being pregnant more.

grace, i love you. you are laying on the floor looking up at your purple fan and pointing and cooing. loudly.
