I asked Jana what it was for and she told me that a mother had just lost her 5 month old. She had left her in the tub in a seat and while she ran to the next room to get her clothes the baby had flipped upside down and drowned. Her husband is away serving in Iraq and we had a phone call for the delivery early this morning.
Can you imagine? This sentence occupied my mind as I worked on other arrangements and cleaned the shoppe, how must she feel?
The grief and pain must be unbearable, the cruel responsibility and heartbreak of losing a child, I knew that the moment this woman opened the door I wanted to just hold her and say it's not your fault.
She answered quickly and quietly, I handed her the flowers and I looked at her. Her eyes were almost swollen shut and she couldn't speak. I wish I could have said more than "here, these are for you..."
I had to let the flowers speak for me and I slid back to the van and cried all the way to Teton.
This made things better.
